The aim of
treatment is to eliminate the internal causative factors of the disease which
is due to the wrong body habits, food habits incompatible combinations of food
items, suppressions of the natural urges and emotional imbalances etc, various
therapeutic procedures are used to facilitate the elimination of such harmful
factors. Panchakarma are the therapeutic means of eliminating impurities from
the body. It is a series of five therapies or steps, which help to remove
deep-rooted stress and impurities from the physiology by balancing the doshas -
those energies or forces that govern all biological functions. There are five
cleansing procedures or sodhanas in Panchakarma. They are:

One
of the panchakarma procedure: it is a medicated emesis therapy, which cleanses
kapha toxins collected in the body and deconjest the respiratory tract. Daily
treatments are administered to loosen and mobilize the toxin and to finally
eliminate them. Internal oral medicines are administered to induce vomiting. It
is beneficial for Bronchial Asthma, chronic allergies, Vitilogo, Psoriasis,
Hyper acidity, chronic indigestion, Nasal congestion, Edema, Obesity and skin
disorders.

It
is medicated purgation therapy, which removes pitha toxins from the body. It
completely cleanses the gastro-intestinal tract. Here internal medicines are
administered to induce purgation. It is beneficial for skin disorders, Asthma,

Nasyam is the
administration of medicated oil through the nose and cleanses accumulated Kapha
toxins from the head and neck region. It is beneficial for headache, sinusitis,
and insomnia. It improves eyesight.

Is considered
as the mother of all treatments. It cleanses the accumulated toxins from all
the three doshas, viz. vatha, pitha and kapha. Vasthi is also highly beneficial
as a rejuvenating treatment. Medicated oil or ghee and herbal decoctions given
as enema to clean the colon and increase muscle tone. It is beneficial for
Hemi-plegia, para-plegia, constipation, backache, sciatica, obesity, sexual
debility, infertility etc.

Lukewarm
herbal oils are applied all over the body. It helps to tone up the skin,
muscles, and tendons. The impurities in the blood are evaporated out. It is

rice, processed with herbal decoction, and milk is filled in cloth pouches and
applied on the body. It is effective for strengthening muscles, and nerves.

Luke
warm herbal oil is poured through a cap fitted on the head. It is effective for
the treatment of headache, dryness of nostrils, mouth and throat.

It
is a very special method, wherein forehead is treated with incessant flow of
herbal oils, medicated milk and buttermilk. It relieves the patient from mental
tensions, insomnia, and certain skin diseases.

Herbal leaves, coconut scraps, pieces of lemon are mixed and put in a cotton
pouch. Medicated herbal oil is prepared separately. The pouch containing herbal
leaves is put in warm medicated herbal oil and applied on the body.

Herbal leaves and other medicinal powder are boiled in high temperature and the
steam is administered on the patient who is seated in an air tight box, for
various durations, depending upon the individual medical requirements. The

on the body for about 30 to 40 minutes daily, for a period of 14 to 28 days.

Abhyangam or
Oil massage" is a special type of oil massage in which strokes are given
according to the circulatory channels for 45 minutes per day for 14 days. This
treatment is very useful for obesity, loss of skin luster, sleeplessness,
fatigue, and other vatha predominant diseases.

In this process, specially prepared warm medicated oil is kept over the lower
